Authentically Me: A Resolution to Value Myself and Celebrate Others

1 Peter 2:9-10

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood,a holy nation,God’s special possession,

that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;

once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Growing up I had 2 nicknames. My first one was given to me by my grandpa when I was in about 3rd grade or so…. “hunk.” Seriously, I couldn’t make this up.  I was tall and sturdy, and my grandpa called me “hunk.” Then, right about the time I hit 6th grade or so, my brother started calling me “Goober”….. “Goob,” for short. I am not lying to you when I tell you that I did not hear the name “Meg” or “Megan” come out of my brither’s mouth again until I was in college… and it made me check my ears when I heard him utter it!

Now, keep in mind that my brother and i are only 14 months apart and he is my senior…. so all through my awkward teenaged years not only did he call me “goob” but so did all of his friends who I happened to see all day at school and around town.

No bueno.

High school Meg

I totally get that these were nick-names…… terms of endearment…. but they did not sound or feel very endearing at all and they sure did help me grow up with all sorts of insecurities about myself. I also grew up being called anything not nice that you could possibly think of by my dear brother and yes, it did have a directly negative effect on my self-esteem. I chose to believe what he said about me. I also chose to believe that I was too much of a “hunk” to ever be thought of as attractive to the opposite sex. In fact, once I did start dating, I always seemed to find myself with men who felt that they needed to hide their relationship with me. I can’t really be all that bad, right?

RIGHT!!! Did you read that little bit of scripture that I put at the top of today’s blog post? Did you? OH, I hope you did, but if you missed it, it’s okay….. I do need to point out some awesome truth in it for you!!! What I see in that scripture is that I have VALUE!!!

To God, I am….

Chosen, royal, holy, His special possession!!!

God would never want to hide me….. He has created you and me specifically and perfectly just the way we are to fulfill His purposes on earth. We are CHOSEN! We are ROYAL! We are HOLY! We are SPECIAL and we are HIS!!!!!

THAT is truth from God’s word, not lies meant to keep us down and not live up to God’s calling on our lives! I need you all to STAND with me today as we BOLDLY begin to peel the untrue labels off of us and leave them on the floor, under our feet right where they belong. They are not ours to wear, they are not ours to own.

Today I will be making a list of all of the lies that have been said over me my whole life and I will destroy it. I hope you will do the same and never pick up these labels to be worn again! Together we can do this, you and I, sister, and we can silence the lies that have been ringing in our heads all these years that we aren’t good enough, small enough, big enough, smart enough, dumb enough, quiet enough, loud enough, blah blah blah…….

YOU ARE ENOUGH!!!!!!! You are amazing in every way just as you are! God made you YOU for a reason…. and it is time to let yourself be as AMAZING as He knows you are!

Let me know how your list goes and I promise I’ll do the same ❤

Dear Lord, thank you for Your Truth! You say in your word that I am chosen by You. Thank you Father for making me who I am and for giving me the strength and courage I need today to break free from the lies and negativity that were spewed over me. Forgive all of the people who said these things, Lord, and heal their hearts as you are healing mine. I thank you in advance for this restoration and I pray you meet me right where I am today as I make this list and rebuke all of it in Jesus’ name! Thank you Lord!!!! Amen ❤

A very wise friend told me last week the I do not own the negatives that I or others have spoken over me. These words do not define me. Nor do they make me who I am today! I was rejected the. He accepts me! I was made fun of back then. He tells me I am precious in His eyes! What satan meant to destroy me..God is using today to make me healthy & whole. He is using you and I to tell the Truth to those who are hurting! Bring it on Sister!!!!!

hmmm…now there’s a thought “making a list of all of the lies that have been said over me my whole life and I will destroy it…” i could do that! oh boy…somehow i think that this week’s study is going to take me more than one week.
megan, i so appreciate that, in your prayer, you also asked God to “…forgive…the people who said these things…and heal their hearts as you are healing mine…” so very important; Jesus said so!<3

I still try to grasp the value I have in God, my worth to Him, it’s still hard to grasp. After growing up with such low self esteem, not good enough, not pretty enough, fat, never be able to do anything right. My list can go on and on! To this day I still claim myself to be a failure, not good enough. My husband the other night actually told me that hearing those things actually hurts him! Make a list and destroy it! If I can “keep” to it! that could be something to work on though!! Oh and Megan, just my opinion, your pic right here seriously I think looks like Drew Barrymore, just with longer hair!! I hope you take that as a compliment, I think she is pretty and yep your pic there looks like her!! Great blog this morning!

Yeah…. people used to tell me I looked like Drew or Joan Cusack. I love them both, so its all good! Craig has told me it hurts him when I speak negative thoughts over myself too. Please, Patricia…. please make your list today and destroy it ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!! God wants better for us and its not right for US to keep ourselves in this place that is only fueled by LIES!!! Praying for you and those you have hurt you today ❤

For some reason Isaiah 43:1 came to mind while reading your blog: Do not be afraid for I have ransomed (redeemed) you..I have called you by name; you are Mine! Made the list – didn’t realize how long the list would be or how much those lies still hurt. I think the ones that hurt me the most are the ones from people who are suppose to love me & see the value in me. Pretending they are labels & will shred each one as I peel it off. Thanks Megan!

Cynda…. I found the SAME THING as I made my list…. I cried! It makes me so sad that those words still sting so much, even when I know they are not true. There is so much power in our words and it makes me determined to be so much more intentional about the words that i let loose from my own lips!

My list is gone, destroyed, and will have NO MORE power of me!!! In Jesus’ name!!!! Claiming that for you as well, dear friend! ❤
